Tomorrow two of my close friends are leaving to go to Chicago to spend the next 3 days walking 60 miles in support of breast cancer. I am so proud of both of my friends and cannot believe that they are actually going to be doing this, mostly because both of them are not necessarily inclined to laud the wonders of nature and they will be sleeping in tents every night after walking 20 miles each day.
Me, being the ever-resourceful one, decided a few months ago when they committed to this walk that they needed some publicity off of it. So, I looked up a reporter's email address at our local paper and I emailed her lots of wonderful! statements! ending! in! exclamation! points! about my friends and their walk. I pretty quickly got the heave-ho over to another reporter, one that obviously appreciated my enthusiasm more than the first one. This was back in March so basically from March until the end of July I have single-handedly filled this guy's whole inbox with "friendly reminders" that my friends are doing a great thing, and unless he is a cold, shallow, heartless piece of shit, he should definitely feature their story in the paper. (That's a bit hyperbolic, but you get the point)
So, as of yesterday, Tuesday, August 5, Alison & Mandy were front page news and the world (or the whole town of Spartanburg, at least) could appreciate their efforts. I subsequently promoted myself to PR rep and I am now offering my services to anyone that feels they have a valid story to promote.
In the meantime, feast your eyes on this:
