American Idle

I'll admit, I used to watch American Idol. When Kelly Clarkson won the first season, and then went on to sell upwards of a million records, I thought there might actually be something to this little show. But, after 5 more seasons and nary a decent record out of any of the winners (read: losers), I lost interest, and more aptly, became slightly annoyed at the crazed obsessiveness viewers seemed to have over these people.

Now, I love to watch the pre-season stuff where they audition all the shittiest delusional "singers" in America and then destroy their dreams singlehandedly by telling them that every person around the auditioner is lying to their face, and honestly, how could they think they even have a chance. Yeah, I'm all into that. But, when that fun ends, so does my viewing.

Apparently last night was the finale of this season of AI. I know that there was some really loud gay dude, and some dude that fancies himself as a "rocker" as the final contestants, and I only know this because I watch way too much E! tv. I think it's no secret that whoever wins this competition has just sold their soul to Clive Davis and can pretty much forget having any artistic license or free thought for the rest of their singing career. I think, also, that the level of participation by viewers is quite absurd. Girls crying, people starting fights and losing it over "their favorite contestant" not winning? Please.

When I logged onto Facebook today, approximately 13 of the first 20 status updates I read had some sort of reference to that person's opinion over who won American Idol last night. You know what? I don't care. At all. The winner in no way enriches or depletes the quality of my life, and you want to know why? Because I listen to REAL music written by real singer/songwriters and not cheesy pop icons who happen to have a semi-decent voice.

So, just like every other Idol winner (minus Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, who both seemed to tap into an untouched market), I predict that last night's winner will become a washed up, worn out recording artist in 3...2...
