Every year I tend to go on a rant about what a useless holiday Valentine's Day is and how I feel that love should not have to have one individual day to be expressed, blah blah blah. Sure, a few of those rants have been rooted in resentment that other people can manage to hold down relationships when I can't, or some other equally cryptic reason.
However, this year I have not felt one bit of resentment towards this Day of Luv. In fact, I haven't even once referred to it as "Singles Awareness Day." I'm not sure if it's maturity (ha), or something else, but I have actually enjoyed today. I have felt surrounded by love from the people that matter to me most which I think is far more important than being overwhelmed with cheap tokens of semi-affection. Both my dad and Alison gave me cards that really touched me, my friends have all sent wonderful expressions of thoughtfulness today and my mom loaded me up with delicious Mrs. Fields chocolates. I also used this evening as a good excuse to eat as many as I wanted, along with as much wine as necessary. How can you NOT like this day with justification like that?!
In other news, I received a moment of mini-celebrity status today when I was featured on the local news in response to a question about the revitilization of downtown Spartanburg. Try to not blink when you watch this, else you may miss my debut into stardom:
I think I'll stick with my day job.
I hope everyone's day was as joyful and love-filled as mine! Happy Valentine's Day!
